Home Staging Mistakes

While I was watching this last week’s episode of Dancing with the Stars, I realized that the challenges that some of the stars have with learning their dances is similar to the challenges that Home Stagers, realtors and home sellers face when staging a property. The judge’s critique of Ty Murray and Lawrence Taylor’s dances was that although they got all the steps, their performance lacked emotion and a real connection with the dance. Unfortunately, many staged homes suffer a similar problem. Sure, decluttering, and cleaning is a component of home staging, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Unfortunately, many homes that are staged have been decluttered and cleaned up and it may even be decorated, but lack personality and fail to make an emotional connection with prospective buyers.

Here are a few additional marketing strategies that can help you stimulate new business, increase business from existing customers and build repeat business. You do not have to use all of them, but you can certainly use some of them.

Here are two marketing strategies that can help you stimulate new business, increase business from existing customers and build repeat business. I will be sharing a few more in Part 3 of this article series. Obiviously, you do not have to use all of them, but you can certainly use some of them.

We as Home Stagers need to understand is that we are not in the business of Staging Homes. We are actually in the business of marketing our Home Staging business. As one of my mentors always says, “the marketing is more important than the mastery”. Think about this for a second. We could be the best Home Stager around. We know exactly how to plan out the optimum floor plan, choose the best colors, turn crack houses into model homes, but if we don’t market ourselves and get the business, we will never get to create those beautiful spaces and get paid for it.

I am amazed by the amount of B.S. there is on the internet about starting a home staging business. It’s unbelievable that what these people come up with. Who are they? I can’t imagine they could be real Stagers that have any experience to draw from. Here’s one article from some bozo off a website called barnumproductions.com.

I was curious, as I’m sure the rest of you were when they announced this new program airing on HGTV called “The Stagers”, if it would be a true depiction of what Home Staging life is like. I would have to say that it’s probably the most realistic of the shows that are out there today, but still does not tell the whole story. Regardless, here are some things that I feel you could learn from the show and apply directly to your own Home Staging business (Part 2 of 2).
