Countdown to Spring: Spring Cleaning Your Floors

Did you vacuum?  I did...I'm so happy with the results.  The baking soda really works...love it!So here we are...only 3 days until Spring.  Today, we're going to continue working on floors - specifically tile, laminate and hardwood.Bona Floor cleanerThe product line that I like is Bona.  They have a complete suite of cleaning products for tile, laminate and hardwood, as well as mops with microfiber pads.  They're available at your local home improvement stores, Target and Bed Bath & Beyond (don't forget your coupon!)We'll start with cleaning your tile or more specifically, grout.  The grout is the usually the areas that traps a lot of dirt.  Spring cleaning is a great time to take extra steps to clean your tiled areas.  Here's another great video tutorial from Melissa Maker of Clean My Space on How to Clean Grout.

Once you've cleaned the grout, this would be a great time to seal the grout to protect your hard work.  Here's a great tutorial from Young House Love on How to Seal Grout.Next up...hardwood floors. There are many different types of hardwood floors:1) Polyurethane coating makes the floors look clean and shiny2) Hardwood finished wood has a waxy or oily coating which repels water or liquid3) Unfinished hardwood CANNOT be mopped since it will damage the floorsTo test if you can mop your floors, drop a few drops of water in a discreet area and if it beads, you have a floor coating.  No matter what type of wood flooring you have, it's NEVER a good idea to pour water over your floors to mop it.  This applies to both hardwood and especially laminate flooring which will absorb the water and you'll automatically see swelling of the floor boards because they're basically acting like a sponge.  Unfortunately, there is no way to repair this damage other than to replace the flooring. Here's a video tutorial on How to Clean Hardwood Floors
and How to Clean Laminate Floors
Hope you found these tips and tutorials helpful.  Come back tomorrow for more Spring Cleaning fun!
