Mirrored Closet Doors in the Master Bedroom – Home Staging Selling Feature or Threat to Your Marriage?

If you’ve ever purchased a new home, I’m sure you’ve been given the option to “upgrade” to mirrored closet doors. On a condo conversion project that I worked on, I offered my advice about where to strategically install mirrored closet doors without blowing the budget because of course, mirrored closet doors are more expensive than regular doors.Mirrors are wonderful accessories. They make smaller spaces appear larger and they help to reflect light. Well, what if I told you that not everyone views these floor to ceiling reflectors as an “upgrade?”As a professional home stager, I remember the first time I saw this, I thought it was the strangest thing, but I quickly learned that there is a rhyme and reason for this seemingly strange behavior. I’m referring to folks who turned the mirrored closet doors around so that the mirror faced inward. They would literally flip it inside out because they didn’t want to see their reflection when they were sleeping. But, why you ask?Because according to feng shui practitioners, “mirrors are very energetic and what it essentially does is, it doubles the people in your bedroom.” It appears to bring more people into the marriage which is of course, is not a good thing (whether you’re a feng shui practitioner or not). The problem with that was, when it came to staging, it was important to show off the mirrored closet doors, so I had my clients flip them back around.  They are still considered an upgrade by non-feng shui enthusiasts. So what do you do to remedy that if you have such a feature in your home? Well, I invite you to join us for the Home Selling Success Telesummit this summer to get answers to questions just like this. This is a great temporary solution because when it’s time to move, you can just strip off the wallpaper, turn the doors back around, and it'll be like it never happened. This was the missing piece in all the closet doors that I saw in my staging client’s homes…the backside of the closet doors were bare and not very attractive.Pretty clever solution don't you think?  Please share your thoughts with me in the comments below.
