If you enjoy a good DIY, you are definitely in for a treat today. One surefire way to add a little pizzazz or oomph to your space is with color and pattern. There are different ways to achieve this result such as with drapery or furniture and accessories, but one that really has a lot of impact is a statement wall and we're not just talking about adding an accent color. Traditionally, this is achieved with wallpaper. If you've ever inherited wallpaper, you know what a royal pain in the you know what it is to remove it. I've done it more times than I care too and if I never did it again, it would be too soon. A very easy and inexpensive alternative to achieving a similar look is with wall stencils. All it takes is some time, a little patience, a stencil kit and some paint. That's it. You can literally transform a wall or a room in a matter of hours. Here's a dining room wall that I stenciled
The homeowner wanted a black wall in the dining room. I love black, but here's the thing. This was an old house with smooth-ish walls. A solid black wall showed all the surface imperfections and let's be honest, it doesn't offer the most exciting result, especially on camera. I desperately wanted to wallpaper this one wall because I knew it would create the drama that we needed. Unfortunately, it just wasn't in the budget. On sale, a wallpaper like this one pictured is $173.25/roll which covers 30sf. So if you had 10 ft ceilings, you'd get one full length of coverage. A 10 foot wide wall would run you about $1800-$2000, not including supplies and labor if you were not brave enough to install it yourself. It is beautiful though isn't it?
Now compare it with my stenciled wall. A very similar result achieved at a fraction of the cost. We're talking maybe $150 in materials? I'd say it's worth the DIY to save a few coins right? To achieve this look, we painted the base in flat black then stenciled over it in the same paint color but in a glossy finish. So dramatic and oh so glamorous! Shop the look here!
Here's another one we did for a different episode on the wall behind the bathroom vanity...what a beautiful backdrop! We stenciled over the main paint color with a metallic gold paint. It is a showstopper wouldn't you agree?! And the best part is, since this is done in a bathroom, it plays well with steam whereas wallpaper will eventually start peeling from the constant moisture. You can't beat that! Shop this look here.
Would you consider adding some drama to your home with wall stencils? The price is right and there are so many different patterns to choose from to suit your personal taste. Remember, if it makes your heart skip a beat when you walk into the space, it's worth the effort!
