My New Color Obsession: Decorating with Yellow & Grey

Move over beige...there's a new game in town. Grey is so fresh, modern, contemporary, classic, and yes...neutral. And the best part is, grey looks great with almost every color. I look forward to showing you some delicious color combinations over several blog posts, but first up, I want to introduce you to the new royal couple...yellow and grey! I'll be honest. I've never been a huge fan of yellow. I've seen some awful yellow houses, rooms, and let's face it, I'm Asian...yellow is not really our color, but ultimately, it's the tone of the color that makes all the difference in the world! I am LOVING the combination of yellow and grey together. Throw in some white or black, even a little turquoise and it is FABULOUS! It's also very retro and fun. It's Hollywood Glam.

One of my favorite design styles is Hollywood Regency and Kelly Wearstler, a designer who is well known for incorporating this style into her designs used a similar palette in designing the Avalon Hotel Palm Springs. Tori Spelling chose this color palette when her and husband, Dean McDermott renewed their vows.  I love her because of her attention to details.  All of her decor was in this color palette, including a motorcycle that she spray painted yellow and take a look at their attire. Isn't it beautiful? So chic.

Here are some very cost effective and even safe ways to incorporate this color scheme into your decor.

  • Accent pillows are a fantastic way to incorporate bolder colors and add interest to any decor.  Whether it be on your sofa or on your bed, it's an instant makeover.  When you tire of it, just switch out the pillows or get new covers made.

  • There's also a lot of fun bedding available as well.  The one below is from Dwell Studio for Target.  For affordable, contemporary bedding, I highly recommend you check out the Dwell Studio line for Target.  You're going to love it!

  • Don't forget to sprinkle coordinating accents throughout your space.  Lamps, vases, flowers, whatever speaks to you.

  • Most importantly, have fun!  Adding a little color to your world can CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

I have been denouncing the home staging rule of going "neutral" for several years now because what tends to happen is all the houses turn into boring vanilla boxes. In reality, there's nothing wrong with neutral. The definition of neutral as a color is that it is harmonizing with most other colors. When I hear clients use the word neutral, what I really hear is "safe". So many people are afraid to step out of the vanilla box because of fear. They love color, they just don't know how to work it in. I don't know what it is. Perhaps it's because we're finally seeing some sunshine. It's May. It's Spring! Flowers are blooming. Summer is near. I love all the bright colors associated with this time of year. Well, let's take a cue from nature and freshen things up. I'm obsessed with everything paired with grey - my favorite "neutral".
