SPRING 2017 ONE ROOM CHALLENGE - POWDER ROOM MAKEOVER WEEK 1

I'VE BEEN HEARING ABOUT THIS ONE ROOM CHALLENGE, A 6 WEEK DESIGN CHALLENGE HOSTED BY LINDA FROM CALLING IT HOME FOR ABOUT A YEAR AND NEVER REALLY UNDERSTOOD IT, UNTIL NOW.
I may have even scoffed at the idea since ah hem, I've done a whole house renovation in 6 weeks which include at least 2 full gut bathroom renovations and a kitchen so, one room...psshhh, no problem! Except, it is when it's your house! What's the saying? The cobbler's children have no shoes? Yup, that's me. Always working on other's people's houses using other people's $$$, but my own projects get put on the back burner. So, the one room challenge is just what I need to light a fire under my booty. I work well with deadlines!
Just so everyone understands, I don't own this house, I rent. The nice thing is the landlords are some of my closest friends so any upgrades I make is a bonus for me while I'm living here and for them in the long run. I'm not interested in buying another house any time soon. I've had this ongoing dialogue in my head that as soon as my daughter is in college, I don't plan to be tethered to any one location, but that's a whole other conversation.
THE ROOM I'M CHOOSING TO WORK ON FOR THE ONE ROOM CHALLENGE IS THE HALF BATH OR POWDER ROOM ON THE FIRST FLOOR.
It's original to the house except for the mirror, light fixture, and faucet which was replaced probably 20 years ago? It's time for an upgrade!
The laminate flooring was installed at least 10-15 years ago, but we're going to keep that.
I CHOSE TO TACKLE THIS SPACE FOR THE ONE ROOM CHALLENGE BECAUSE A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, WHEN I WENT TO USE THE SINK, I NOTICED THESE CHIPS IN THE SINK AND IT TOOK ME A FEW MINUTES TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IT WAS.
I finally realized that it was the porcelain from the sink by the air gap that was chipping off. The craziest thing is that pieces flew across the way and landed near the faucet which is so bizarre to me. There was so much pressure that it just exploded?! It's been rusty for as long as I've lived here so it's time to upgrade it. Looks like a sad emoji doesn't it?
Let's take a look at the powder room in its existing state:
Here's what needs to be done...
remove and replace the existing counter top
remove and replace the existing sink
remove and replace the faucet
paint the bathroom vanity (it's easier to keep this cabinet since it's in good physical condition, but also because the waste pipe runs underneath which poses design challenges; a new cabinet would need to be modified to accommodate the piping - see picture below)
add hardware to the painted vanity cabinet doors
remove the shelf liners and replace with something new (this is a bonus since I have time to fill in)
replace the existing light bar
replace the existing mirror (if I can find something I like at a good price)
remove the existing towel bars and replace with a single towel ring
install wallpaper
This is the initial plan. It may change a little bit over the next few weeks. My goal is to create a sophisticated tropical space. I love to go bold in powder room because they're smaller and less intimidating. It's a low moisture space so you don't have the concerns that larger, functional baths do. Let's see how the next few weeks go. If I'm feeling ambitious, I may throw getting my patio summer ready into the mix. Thanks again for stopping by. Stay tuned for the design plan in week 2.
