3 Quick & Easy Ways to Give Your Kitchen an Instant Facelift

One of the most important rooms in the house is the kitchen. Whether you’re remodeling for your own personal use or for resale, you will always recoup your investment in upgrading this space (unless you go overboard).

Here are my top 3 tips to give your kitchen an instant facelift without breaking the bank.

1)  Paint the Cabinets – this is definitely where you’d get the biggest bang for your buck.  A lot of times, the actual cabinets are in decent shape but may be dated or the finish is a little worn.  You can choose to clean and revarnish them if it’s a beautiful wood, but generally speaking, a coat of paint can do wonders and it’s a lot less expensive than refacing.  Now keep in mind, if you choose to do this yourself, brushing paint on cabinets is tedious work (been there, done that) and requires a lot space to lay out the cabinet doors so they can dry.  A professional painter can spray the cabinets and get a much more even finish and be done in a day.  Regardless, this is my #1 recommendation for giving your kitchen an instant facelift.

2)  Add Jewelry – once you’ve painted the cabinets, add new knobs or handles to dress up a plain cabinet.  There are lots of inexpensive options available at your local home improvement store or even IKEA.  Knobs are like jewelry for your kitchen…every space could use a little sparkle.

3)  Update Appliances – this doesn’t mean you have to run out and get stainless steel appliances, but that is an option.  The key is to make sure that the appliances match in color and style.  If you have a white microwave, almond range and black dishwasher, the mismatched colors is not going to be buyer attractive.

Here is an example of a space where we did the three recommendations above. We painted the cabinets which completely brightened up the space and took it out of the 70s.  We added simple, contemporary knobs and drawer pulls and replaced the 70s style microwave and range with a newer black set that matched the existing dishwasher. I'm sure you'll agree it made a huge difference and you don't even notice the old laminate countertops as much as you did before.
