A-Z HOME DECOR TREND 2014: KID SPACES

Welcome Back to the the A-Z Home Decor Trend Guide 2014.I've been revealing the hottest home decor trends currently heating up the market, design blogs, and the internet and today's home decor trend starts with the letter K for...Kid Spaces! This one is for all the parents out there. As I'm sure you've all experienced firsthand, once those children are born, they tend to take over the house. There's the car seat, high chair, swing, bouncer, walker, play yard and the endless array of toys. It's a struggle to maintain a household that doesn't look like a daycare. I get it and this is why today's home decor trend is so important for any and all households with young children. There needs to be dedicated kid spaces so that kid spaces don't end up monopolizing the entire house and in case you were thinking it's not possible because your house is too small, even small homes can have dedicated kid spaces. In fact, it's a must in a small space. They are going to be spaces that play double duty and you'll have to be extra diligent about organization and purging on a regular basis, but it can be done! Let's start with the nursery shall we? And nurseries are just the beginning. Nurseries transition into toddler bedrooms, then big kid bedrooms, tween bedrooms, teenage bedrooms and hopefully after that they're off to college right? That's the hope any way. As your child grows, their needs and tastes change and so their rooms should evolve with them as well. It's really too bad that many times parents wait until their child is about to go off to college before they think about updating their child's room. As I was mentioning earlier, smaller homes require spaces to play double duty. The room below was featured. It was a bedroom/office turned nursery in a small 2 bedroom condo. Notice that the room decor is not only decorative, but it's also functional. The tree trunk has shelves built into it for displaying books and other accessories... So perfect!
Here's another nursery that also has a tree trunk bookcase (I think the one we built above is cuter...just sayin'), but I really like how they maximized the wall space under the window with ledges for book storage and display. Perfect for story time and bedtime book readings...there's at least 5 solid years of that before they start reading to you!
This bench area in the playroom below was featured in our IKEA hack post and it's an excellent example of how to organize a kid space. The baskets in each of the cubbies are a fantastic way to keep smaller toys nice and tidy.
And for those lego loving children, these color coded and labeled plastic pull out tubs are great for organizing all those little pieces. A similar system can be created for storing art supplies, cars, etc.
Kid spaces should be a place where the children can go hang out and enjoy their toys, do arts and crafts and have things accessible at their height. I love the chalkboard wainscoting with the cork board above it. What a great use of wall space and organizational tools that is chic and functional.

If you have a bonus room or basement that can be a dedicated play space, you can really have fun and go above and beyond just your ordinary craft/toy room.
Love the play stage in this room...I don't know any kid whose imagination wouldn't run on overdrive if they had access to this space. I can just see the fashion shows, talent shows, plays, what fun indeed!.
