HOW TO MANAGE YOUR HOME RENOVATION SCHEDULE (SO YOU KNOW HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE)

When you’re starting a Home Renovation, you’ll want to know is How long it will take. Whether it’s a bathroom OR a kitchen OR maybe you’re undergoing an entire home renovation, this is a legit question to ask and an important answer to know. In today's Home Renovation Tips video you'll learn the exact home renovation scheduling strategy I use on every client project so they are completed quickly and efficiently. I’m also going to walk you through a sample renovation schedule that takes you from demo to a new and improved space in just a few weeks. With this tutorial, you’ll be able to to recreate something similar with your construction team.

The last thing you want when planning a renovation is to be wishy-washy about any part of the process. Wishy-washy gets you wishy-washy results which trust me, no one wants. You’ll be frustrated and you’ll lose engagement from your Construction Team. My top 2 tips for managing your home renovation schedule are:
TIP # 1 - HAVE A START AND END DATE.
People who say, "oh, there’s no rush" ... "we can start anytime"... you’re just setting yourself up for failure. You’re telling your Trades you’re ok with an "open timeline" when you’re really not. It's like an open relationship. Are you really ok with your partner seeing other people or are you trying to appear non-committal? Non-commitment gets you in trouble. You can be flexible, but be definitive meaning, you are open to starting your project this month but if you had to wait until the following month, you’re ok with that BUT, once we start, it needs to be finished by X date. Everyone works better with deadlines. When I work with clients who have said they’re not in a rush, I schedule a START DATE so they know what to expect and what to do do by when. Once you have a start date, you can figure out what the tentative end date is. End dates are important. People need and work best with deadlines.
TIP #2: CREATE A CONSTRUCTION CALENDAR WITH YOUR CONSTRUCTION TEAM
I touched on this in my Home Renovation Planning video. Make sure you watch it because I shared really valuable information in that training. Creating a construction calendar will help everyone identify how long the project will take. You’re not just picking a random date out of thin air, you will actually create a calendar so everyone is aware of what needs to be done and when.
This does 2 things:
1. Contractor will know which Trades to schedule for each day (and allows those Trades to SAVE THE DATE for you). Trust me, rarely are the people on the Team all working for the same company. It’s usually sub-contracted out so you’re essentially working with multiple companies. That means they all have multiple projects they’re juggling so without advance notice, you won’t have the right person on-site when you need them. THIS IS A MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR TO THE SCHEDULE NOT GOING AS PLANNED.
2. You will know what to expect (like which Trades are expected on-site that day) and also lets you know when the Contractors need certain materials chosen and/or available on-site (such as if they’re doing rough plumbing they need to know what your plumbing plans are, which may also mean they need to see the actual product - rain shower head, linear drain, etc.)Watch the video as I walk you through a sample calendar.
There are many activities to add to your construction calendar. You’ll have to calendar everything from demo to completion and the activities in between such as rough plumbing and electrical, inspections, tiling, and so on. So.. now you know how I create a construction calendar for each of my client projects. Do you see how valuable it is to be in the know? You can download a copy of the sample calendar and use it as a guide for completing your own renovation project in just a few short weeks. Of course, you’ll want to compare notes with your contractors on what your actual renovation schedule is. If your contractor tells you something completely different from this and or the schedule is significantly longer than this, you’ll want to question why. Here's to slaying your home renovation!
