We recently partnered with Danze and Gerber to complete a small bathroom remodel for a local Bay Area family. This was a 3 piece bath located downstairs. It was the only bathroom that serviced the downstairs living area and was really used like a powder room, but the family's Grandmother was moving in and would be living in the bedroom adjacent to this tiny bathroom. Since this was now going to be her bathroom, we needed to make sure that this bathroom was fit for someone who is aging in place. As you'll see, the existing bathroom was tiny. The door opened into a toilet on the left and a 30"W vanity on the right. The open door actually hid the stall shower which was not used much. Taking into consideration circumstances that may occur as we age, that shower space would not be conducive to having a second person in there should shower assistance be required. We considered widening the shower in its existing location, but the wall next to the shower housed the furnace and water heater which would be a lot of work to move. After further investigation, it was determined that we could borrow space from the adjoining bedroom to incorporate the closet into the new and improved bathroom and create a 5' shower space. The toilet would then be relocated to where the shower was and that would free up space for a larger vanity. Don't worry, we built a new closet for her on the shared wall with the garage. I'm very happy with the results of the new and improved bathroom. It is now a much more useable space with a larger shower that can accommodate another person (if needed) and is equipped with a built-in bench and handheld shower. The larger vanity (48") was custom designed so that the sink is off-set to the right to allow for more counterspace. We also installed a recessed mirrored medicine cabinet to maximize storage and replaced the swing door with a pocket door which means valuable floor space is freed up. We also installed grab bars in the shower and next to the toilet just in case. When it comes to small spaces like this project, it takes a little re-imagination to make the most of every little square inch. Enjoy the tour and let me know what you think!
